Awestruck by Nature

Grant Walsh Artist Residency 2024

The "Woodwide web"
Woodcut

The unseen root system of trees and the mycelium network under our feet inspired me to draw this three point perspective. I first wanted to use the tree to show the lifecycle of  a cicada. The tree's root system took the spotlight. I have a deep appreciation for the world underneath. Without the wonderful organisms that maintain our soil we wouldn't have a way to decompose and recycle nutrients back into the ground.

Awestruck
Woodcut

I asked people in the community what has awestruck them about nature. I recieved all sorts of responses about rock formations, where the ocean meets the horizon, trees, adaptations in plants and animals, the fibinocci sequence, ect. This print is uniting the experiences of the community. The girl with a butterfly on her nose is a representation of the first time I experienced awe in nature.

Bloom
Plant Pressing

I gathered these flower impressions from my garden and on the Constitution Trail here in town. The trail has been a special place for me to think and connect with others in the community. The trail is a place where the community can bloom together.

Grow
Plant Pressing

Thank you Catalpa tree for your fallen leaves. I've wondered at the beauty of these leaves almost everyday I traveled to my studio this summer. I've wondered what are these massive leaves with bean pods attached to them. Catalpa tree's sparked a curiosity in me that grew into creativity through this print.

Fungi are fascinating organisms. From the intricate patterns on their caps to the delicate gills underneath, mushrooms are a true wonder of nature. They are impacting our future by helping create a more sustainable way to live. Whether decomposing material in the environment or using mycelium as a packaging material, we can change the world by embracing the power of fungi.
